What is Xanax?
Xanax is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines belong to the group of medicines called central nervous system (CNS) depressants (medicines that slow down the nervous system).
Xanax affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety. Xanax tablets contain alprazolam which is an antianxiety agent of the benzodiazepine class.
Each Xanax tablet, for oral administration, contains 0.25, 0.5, 1 or 2 mg of alprazolam
Xanax also have inactive ingredients, such as cellulose, corn starch, docusate sodium, lactose, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, and sodium benzoate. In addition, the 0.5 mg tablet contains FD&C yellow no. 6 and the 1 mg tablet contains FD&C blue no. 2.
